American actor of film and television, former Chicago police officer

Dennis Farina was an American actor of film and television and a former Chicago police officer who passed away at the age of 69 due to a pulmonary embolism. His most famous film roles were those of Ray "Bones" Barboni in "Get Shorty." He was also well known as Detective Joe Fontana on "Law & Order." He was known in acting circles as a character actor, often as a mobster or police officer.
Born 1944 in Chicago, Illinois, he served three years in the army before becoming a police officer in Chicago and served eighteen years in the Burglary Division.
In 1986 Farina started his acting career on the television series “Crime Story” and two years later in 1988 he took the role of Jimmy Serrano, mob boss, in the movie “Midnight Run.”
In 1990 he joined “Law & Order” which made him a household name.
Farina went back to the silver screen in 1995 with the movie “Get Shorty” with John Travolta.
Later in his life he became the new host of “Unsolved Mysteries.”
His last role was in 2012 with the HBO show “Luck.”
